Well there's a billion ways to interpret the quotes, but I generally have #18 raising her effort around the time Trunks jumped into the battle and her fighting at a held-back level where she's more or less similar to Vegeta and the future androids. I also feel Trunks isn't so weak he can barely escape one-on-one in the actual androids arc, unlike in his first appearance.

Do you think Trunks saying he was absolutely no match contradicts Trunks fighting them fairly well?

I don't think helpless indicates a huge gap either, since handsome Zarbon was said to be helpless against 24,000 Vegeta:

Yeah, it doesn't have to mean a huge gap. We know the androids were stronger from multiple implications and them assuming they can kill Trunks, but similar statements have been made for less gigantic gaps like you said.

The gap between both androids at once and him is huge, but he still can at least fight both of them.
In the present, he can't even do anything to 18, let alone fight both of them at once.

Trunks was a lot weaker than the Future Androids. He couldn't beat them.

The Present Androids, who took him down with almost no effort, demonstrated a greater difference.

#17 is sure #18 can take Trunks on her own. Whatever battle he put up against both of them was clearly because they allowed him to because one is enough to take him down.

Therefore, Present>Future>Trunks

I'm not even sure what the issue is.

It doesn't, because he still didn't get his ass kicked as much in the future as he did in the present.

He can fight them RELATIVELY fairly well in comparison to just getting two shot by one android alone.
He got his ass kicked by the future androids, but the present androids kicked his ass even harder, so in that situation, he can fight ''fairly well'' the future androids, simply because he didn't get his ass kicked as much.
