Dragon Ball Z Movie 8 - Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan

I'm really not sure what to make of this movie. It's got more plot thanks to the runtime bump (70min as opposed to 45), but it's a very thin plot. I mean, the big mystery of the movie is spoiled in the (western) title!

Broly is a neat addition to the lore. Most of the Cell Saga is dedicated to deconstructing the Super Saiyan mythology that the Freeza Saga build up, and Movie 8 jumps in the bandwagoon by showing us what the Legendary Super Saiyan is really supposed to be. I also like how Broly doesn't actually give a fuck to Paragus plan or Vegeta, and actually has beef with Goku instead. Or at least I would if the backstory behind his motives didn't make me suicidal. How does he even remember that?

Anyway, after Paragus' antics (which don't make any sense. Why not have Broly kill them instead of the comet?) are ruined by Broly we get what's perhaps the best stomp match in the series. Broly's fighting style is just brutal, and it also helps that unlike his M10 self, Broly is lucid and can talk, so he's not just a retarded mass of muscle. He mocks everyone, blows ups the planet of the slaves for laughs, actively threatens Goku's kid. This is one of the very few times Vegeta is actually reduced to trembling on his knees, and it's great. No wonder Koyama faps Broly so much.

That is, until the ending. Sure, the Genki-Dama was starting to get repetitive, but what the fuck happens here? Did Goku find Broly's weak spot? Or did Broly simply blow up with power? The movies makes a point to show us Broly having to throw Ki blasts because he had too much Ki accumulated, and in the Brazilian dub (Which rarely deviates from the Japanese script) Goku says Broly shouldn't rely so much on his "super powers". I have no idea what happened, but at least it's over.

4.5/10.

Dragon Ball Z Movie 9 - Bojack Unbound

This movie is so much fun. This is the first (and only good one) of three movies without Goku. We get a tournament for the first time in a while, and it’s pretty fun. The tournament also allows Yamcha and Tenshinhan to appear and get some shine. Well, as shine as these two can get. The events of this movie feat into the timeline pretty easily too. And the visuals are stunning. I dare to say DBZ never looked this good.

So what that Bojack and gang have no personality? They’re fucking blue space pirates. How cool is that?

Also is it just me or Bojack was locked inside Earth? The common sense is that he was inside Kaio’s world, but Kaio says Goku’s fight with Cell damaged the planet Bojack and co. were in, and they fought on Earth… no idea why they took 3 years to get to Earth though.

Must have been 3 years only in Trunks’ time then. That or Chi-Chi isn’t a much better parent than Goku.

I don’t really want to watch M10. I have tried a couple times since dropping the M9 review, but meh. Couldn’t find the Brazilian dub on Youtube either (which is pretty surprising) so it’s probably a good signal. Just gonna drop this 1/10 score here.

M11 is actually better than M10, but I don’t want to watch either so 1.1/10.

Do you know why Goku doesn't appear in these movies?

Because he was dead and Toriyama wanted Gohan to be the protagonist at the time, so the movies followed it.

Bojack Unbound is the best Movie in the franchise objectively, although I have a soft spot for Path To Power.

Watched all the movies back in 2021 but I think I stopped giving updates after M9 or so. Here's my tier list including the Z Specials and Super movies:

All movies are good, the only one that shouldn't be made is Movie 11 (they should have created another villain)

10/10 for all movies

1. DBS Broly (best): Some ugly art and I don't care for Tarzan Broly, Chilai, or Lemo, but the fight scenes are awesome, especially Broly vs. Gogeeta. Easily the peak of DBS, and my favorite movie in the franchise.
2. Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan: Broly is easily the best film antagonist. Seeing him stomp everyone was entertaining. But him being traumatized by baby Gokuu's crying was dumb.
3. Super Android Thirteen: Action-packed from start to finish, and not a total Gokuu wankfest. But lol the androids look so stupid.
4. Coola's Revenge: Coola's blatantly a Freeza ripoff, but he's still better than most movie villains. Still, he should've had more screentime; his henchmen are boring.
5. Boujack Unbound: The tournament subplot was pointless (Trunks vs. Tenshinhan is a total waste of runtime). But at least Gohan and the fight scenes were cool.
6. Return of Coola: The art and animation were terrible at times. But overall, the fight scenes were alright. Metal Coola looked cool, too.
7. Battle of Gods: Formulaic and boring. Birus is definitely the best DBS era character, though.
8. Super Hero: The fight scenes were cool, and I liked seeing Gohan and Piccolo be relevant again, but all the new characters sucked.
9. Resurrection of F: Tons of dumb shit in this movie. SSB Gokuu jobbing to a raygun is simply inexcusable. At least the fight scenes were okay.
10. World's Strongest: Solid fight scenes. But too much Gokuu wank and all the new villains suck.
11. Dead Zone: The fight scenes were pretty good, but Garlic Jr and his henchmen suck.
12. Tree of Godly Might: Too much Gokuu wank. Turless and his henchmen suck, too. Cool fight scenes, though.
13. Dragon Fist Explosion: Tapion sucks, Hildegarn sucks, the Trunks focus was unneeded, and the fight scenes weren't even that good due to the size discrepancy between the Z Fighters and Hildegarn. Dragon Fist is cool, though.
14. Fusion Reborn: Gogeeta barely even appears. Pointless subplot with dead villains returning. Minutes of runtime wasted on Hitler and Vekuu. Most overrated movie. At least it has some cool fight scenes.
15. Lord Slug: Slug is a Daimaoh ripoff and Pseudo SS1 only appears for, like, 1 minute. Lame. At least the fight scenes were alright.
16. Bio Broly: Not as bad as most fans say. At least it has alright fight scenes. But you just can't take "Poop Broly" seriously.
17. Broly Second Coming: Veedel, Goten, and Trunks are annoying, Vegeeta and Piccolo don't even appear, and the village subplot is worthless. Not even the fight scenes were that good. This movie just plain sucked. The Family Kamehameha at the end was cool, though.
18. Mystical Grand Adventure: The best movie based on "OG DB", for sure. Quite action-packed, and I don't even recall any perverted fan-service. But it's still a very forgettable retelling of the Red Ribbon arc. They could've at least come up with new villains.
19. Path to Ultimate Strength: Nice art and animation. The runtime of 80 minutes also made it feel like an actual feature film, too. But I don't care for another retelling of the Pilaf and Red Ribbon arcs. And the perverted scenes with Bulma disqualify this film from deserving a high ranking.
20. Sleeping Princess: Damn near the worst movie here. Boring as hell with not many redeeming qualities. The perverted scenes with Bulma are disgusting, too. But at the very least, if I'm not mistaken, this movie is a bit more action-oriented than what you see below.
21. Legend of Shen Long (worst): Not only are the perverted scenes with Bulma disgusting, but this is just a forgettable retelling of the Pilaf arc.
