Tie between Generations II and VI.

I also recently got into Generation VI after just finishing Pokemon Y about a week ago. I enjoy it because of the realistic Pokemon motion (not like Gen V's unrealistic pixel-like motion) and other various features including breeding for IVs and efficient EV training with hordes and other specific hold items.

I like Generation II because of nostalgia and because of the step-up from Gen I. I mean, Gold/Silver really seemed to be the biggest step up from the previous Pokemon game out of every other game. Not only did it have a brand new story in a brand new region, after you finished that quest it let you back into the region from the previous game and play through that whole story again, just to let you face your previous game counterpart for a last battle.

Ruby & Sapphire were a big step up from Gen II introducing natures, improved graphics, and new Pokemon. But it didn't keep the idea of letting you go back to the previous region and playing through that story line, and it didn't let you access almost any of the good old Pokemon, and it didn't let you transfer your Pokemon from older games, unlike every other Pokemon game. All of that work from R/B/Y/G/S/C is now the equivalent of nothing.

Aside from gameplay, Pokemon-wise, I don't like anyone after Gen 4 besides maybe a few people and some of the legendaries. I'm not even familiar with over half of the Unova or Kalos Pokedex.

For Gameplay, Gen VI. It introduced a lot of cool new features and heavily improved many aspects of the gaming. The EXP Share was far more useful, Mega Evolution helped make some Pokémon a lot more useful (even if over half of them just made OU/Ubers even more OP'd), Fairy typing was a complete game changer and finally made Poison/Steel truly useful, with the former having previously only been useful at status conditions. Gen II is a close second due to the dual regions, though I guess you could count Gen IV due to HG/SS instead.

For Plot, it'd have to be Gen V. I've got no idea why people hate on it so much, usually due to Gen 1 bias probably. Black/White had a far deeper plot than the other games, bringing to light the moral aspects of Pokémon battles and having a competent villain team who actually use manipulative methods for a seemingly ideal goal, rather than some over the top supervillain shenanigans. The last section of the main story had more twists than the other Pokémon games too, such as the champion battle being interrupted, as well as the Gym Leaders of this region being the only ones who seem to care about the villain's actions.

Ah Pokémon. The only series that can lather, rinse, and repeat it's formula and people will still flock to the stores in droves to by these games. I've been with this series since the beginning. I've enjoyed every Generation so far (yet to play Gen 6) by favorite to least favorite.

1. Generation 2 - Not the first Pokémon generation I've played but it is the 1st that I've owned. I feel like Crystal has aged fairly well. It's still a lot of fun to play, the soundtrack is imo the best of any Pokémon series even though you can't run and don't have the luxury of special abilities it's a good time. I love that you can explore 2 separate regions and it gave me the toughest battle I've had yet in a Pokémon game with Red atop of Mt. Silver. Nostalgia may have some influence but then again most of them do.

2. Generation 3 - I remember being one of the first to get a copy of a Gen 3 game before it was released in the U.S. I thought this game did a good job in shaking up the foundation. It's started making the series feel more "alive" if you will with the region changes and weather effects added. (Well technically Gen 2 started that with the Day & Night system). But anyway it introduced special abilities and natures which can shift the battle in your favor. It had a good roster of pokemon (added more Dragons and Dragon Pokémon are the best so extra points). It gave remakes of Red & Blue, they're not bad but are my least favorite Pokémon games I've played and I'd honestly rather play the Gen. 1 originals. But my only problems with this region are

(1.) the gameplay is too short. I got Sapphire for my 12th Birthday and I beat the game in 3 days, Emerald extended the gameplay and made it more fun but after you beat the champion there really isn't anything left to do.

(2.) TOO MUCH FUCKING WATER!! WHY IS THERE SO MUCH FUCKING WATER!! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY TENTACOOL, WINGULL, PELIPPER, & WAILMERS?!?! WHY, WHY, WHY?!?!?


3. Generation 4 - It took some time to warm up with this generation but I love it. It expanded on the more life like system that Gen 2 and 3 started, the 3D is a cool touch, another good roster of Pokémon but the flaws I find in this generation is the gameplay is almost just getting badges. Like after you deal with Team Galactic for the Final time you're just getting badges one gym after the other.

Generation 4 is really strong due to Platinum and the Gen 2 remakes. Gen 6 is memorable for the setting, soundtrack and gameplay, but Gen 3 is very nostalgic for me.

If we exclude remakes, I have to go with 3.
