Might as well remake this in 2023 in case anyone has changed their opinions. I can't decide between HG/SS and Platinum.

In terms of original games (no remake or third version) I'd say Black 2 and White 2. While I haven't finished it yet, I can appreciate the improvements on BW, and the post game is very extensive.

Third versions: Platinum is the best, hands down. It renders Diamond and Pearl completely obsolete.

Including remakes: HeartGold and SoulSilver, to me, are the best Pokémon games period. Gen 4 graphics, music and mechanics but with Gen 2 story and setting.

Overall HG/SS > Platinum > Black 2 White 2 > Emerald >> all

That’s funny, because I can’t decide between FR/LG and Emerald.

I've come to realize that every single Pokemon game has some facet to it that I really dislike that another game(s) typically lacks, and that's made this question harder and harder over the years.

I agree with the general consensus that the best few are BW, BW2, HGSS, Platinum, and Emerald, but beyond that it's hard to say.

I agree. I tend to like Gold and Silver better than Crystal now for example, because they focus on Generation 1 Pokemon more than Crystal does, I like Mareep better than Phanpy and Teddiursa now, etc.

The overt focus on Gen 1 Pokemon was the Johto games' biggest flaw other than the terrible level curve. Johto Pokemon have the least presence out of all the first 4 generations, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokemon got way better treatment esp with Platinum's expanded Sinnoh dex and ORAS' Megas.

Hell even in Gold/Silver's opening the only damn Johto Pokemon are the starters lmao, and Charizard finished it off

When you consider that Gold and Silver is like a dump game for the Pokemon that didn't make it into Red and Blue though, it makes sense. LOL.

There are Pokemon like that in all generations. Hell, Rhydon was the first Pokemon ever conceived, that's why the default sprite for Pokemon looks like him.

Plus it's pretty disgusting to not see Falkner use Hoothoot/Noctowl instead of Pidgey/Pidgeotto, Bugsy only use Metapod, Kakuna and Scyther and Morty only use the Gastly line when there's a damn Johto Ghost Pokemon in the goddamn dex (Misdreavus). Pokemon Special remedied this by having Falkner own a Noctowl and Skarmory, Bugsy own a Heracross and Morty a Misdreavus.

This thread is bringing back memories of when I was super obsessed with Pokémon Go. I was all about catching them and that game really got me walking all over the place. But these days, I'm leaning towards games that are a bit more chill. Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of Spider Solitaire. It's a nice change of pace—still keeps me engaged, but in a more laid-back way.

I probably had the most fun playing through BW and BW2. Still haven’t totally finished playing the post-game in either, although I beat everything in the PWT with my Emerald mons that I transferred over.

Emerald is the game I’ve put the most time into though, I’ve done everything in that game except complete the national dex (which I now have the means to do, if I wanted to).

In BW so many cool pokemon come too late. The villain is much more interesting and more of an antihero, but I got spoilt so stopped. Honestly I reduced my enjoyment by looking up pokemon on bulbapedia too much too. Doing it a little can make it more enjoyable, but it starts to feel less immersive and sentimental if overdone.

Emerald...ya know lol. Didn't finish that either, for the same reason I didn't finish Sapphire as a kid.

Yellow was amazing the first time as a kid on GBC, for giving all the starters and the interactable Pikachu, but when I played it later I wasn't such a fan of being given all the starters, because then you only have 2 places left in your party. You could put the starters in the PC, but it just feels wrong to put those legendary pokemon away, if you're trying to build the stongest team it definitely makes no sense to put away Blastoise and Charizard to get Ponyta and whoever the fuck, plus it messes with the story...oh cool, thanks for gifting me with your precious pokemon - I'll put it in the PC lol. Just made my character a psycho.
It's fine if you do change your party for different parts of the game, but I didn't do that when I was younger.
Still cool that Yellow exists though, as a unique experience.
