a poor-meng’s Alabasta?

It sounds like one. Was the Dressrosa saga really just an Alabasta retread or was it more?

Discuss…XD

It is a poor man's Alabasta. I think so much frustration of it as a Story Arc stems from it having the story elements of Alabasta/Skypiea, but turning into a more Marineford type Story Arc during the Bird Cage. Great potential, but terrible execution.

I think I like it more than Alabasta.

Alabasta is like top material. My fav. saga (from what I remember). No way a retread surpasses the OG.

Also I don't think you answered the thread (if you can & want to), do you think it's an Alabasta rehash?

It follows the same formula yes, like most One Piece arcs tend to do.

Dressrosa is meant to represent what Alabasta would have become if Crocodile had succeeded.

Not only same formula, but same character roles with same situations, except that one exception you mentioned.

Yeah I don't disagree with that lol. But your just listing plot points that you heard about without context, like you could literally summarize Arlong Park and Skypeia in that same way and make it sound identical.

Maybe you'll still feel the same way if you read the arc, but I'm just sharing my opinion on it.

I can see it, even if I read a summary and see some videos. It's painfully obvious Rebecca = Vivi.

Doflamingo trying to frame (maybe not right word but you get it) former King and take-over Dressrosa and so-on.

They are very similar in structure. Dressrosa was painful to read week to week but it isn't that bad upon reread. I think it excels in some areas like having a more compelling villain, and introducing interesting power triangles with the SHC/fleet, Doflamingo, and the Marines. I do think it suffered from bad pacing and tried too hard to copy Alabasta, which is why I view it as being worse overall.

Arlong-Park & Skypiea similarities? What?
Enel and Doflamingo seeing themselves as gods, Gan Fall and Dressrosa King being taken out of their thrones and their reputations foiled, the citizens of both countries believe their ruler have their best wishes for the country. And lastly, both arcs are meant to represent the conflict between the D clan (Luffy) and the celestial dragons (Enel, Doflamingo).

D-Clan/celestial dragon feud is I believe a running theme through-out the series so does that really count?

Did Skypiea have a kingdom that was going to be taken-over (or was taken-over) by a war-lord? Did Skypiea have the princess of said kingdom align herself with the Straw-Hat-Crew? Did Skypiea have the introduction of one of Luffy's brothers (which I only noticed after that was pointed-out)?
