Gohan would finish Buu off on his own after giving him the beatdown he already give him, prob is, Goku wouldn't have revived, is doubtious wheter Vegeta could've returned (unless we talk about a new enemy that comes) and Fat Buu would've died.

But script can also affect characters' mentality if it's needed, if that were the case, a similar pattern of the actual facts could have occured.

What do you think could've happened if Gohan kept fighting on his own? Would Boo survive with the pieces of his back he released prior to the fight, or would Gohan find them and kill them?

How would that impact the events of BoG and onwards now that Goku isn't revived and there is no Boo or Oob (unless Goku wishes for Super Boo to be reincarnated into Oob instead to one day fight him when he once again dies).

Gohan would still manage to fuck this up with how inept he was. Boo would get desperate and would find a way to absorb Gohan, who even with intel on the absorption would still find a way to drop his guard and get absorbed. The series would probably end up the same way with Goku/Vegeta going to earth and fusing into Vegetto, freeing Gohan, and then eventually beating Pure Boo.

What SSJ2 said makes sense. Boo already had a piece of himself laying down waiting for Gotenks, he could have absorbed Gohan right there if he wanted.
