I don't understand why Toriyama didn't just design him with a nose. Him lacking one makes no sense and adds to nothing in the story (aside from when he beat Bacterian, but he could've just held his breath or something). There are even some scenes where he's shown to somehow be able to smell despite lacking a nose.
