Sounds like he was faking it if nobody identified his Ki signature before. First time this ability is seen in the show I think, transformations aside.

The anime's interpretation of God Ki indicates that it's simply perfected Ki control. If that applies to the manga then it's possible that he allowed his Ki to leak out as a ''camouflage''.

Toppo in the anime seemingly used mortal Ki before transforming to his Hakaishin form. Seems like these guys can activate and deactivate it at will.
