Super in general is a waste of time, but this current arc seems like a waste of time even by Super standards. It's highly doubtful the arc will introduce anything that'll play into later arcs such as new transformations or recurring characters, unless the recent events on Namek lead to Piccolo being brought in and plot haxed. There's no real need for a new transformation for Goku when he could just be forced to go Ultra Instinct again to save the day, so unless that form is going to get shafted like every other transformation in Super by its successive arc, I doubt there'll be much to take away after all is done.

This begs the question. Why did that Galactic Patroller guy shoot them unconscious if he was just going to explain it back at HQ? Wouldn't it have made more sense to have just explained it to them at Hercule's place?

Why rumours? The galactic patrol knows Goku and Vegeta killed the resurrected Freeza, and the galactic patrol knows they fought in the U6 tournament. Hell, why didn't this Galactic patroller guy try to reason with them if he was aware of them?
