Watching the anime would probably be a better option, given how ass the art style of the manga can get at some points and the 2011 anime does a very good job in terms of pacing for the most part, save a few episodes in the Chimera Ant Arc.

The art honestly isnt a big deal to me. The story takes precedence over the art, and I'd much rather read the most accurate source. Not to mention I have 0 interest in investing much more time into an anime that features a plot I already know, when I could read the manga at a much faster pace.

Finished chapter 4. So far I haven’t minded the screening process for the exams, although I found it to be a bit of an asspull that Kurapika recognized an ancient tattoo on the mystical beast’s daughter which proved she had no spouse. Come on lol.

I’d have liked to see the Navigators take the trio from their residence to Zaban City. It was claimed that without a navigator there wasn’t a chance in hell that anyone could get to the exam hall, due to various traps and set-ups. I’d have liked to see that expanded upon..

Gon seems to definitely be a cut above him with how his strength was presented as the best of the initial trio for most of the exam. I wouldn't cite Kurapika as stomp material to him at his peak though, considering the way he stomped Majitani was very impressive. I'd say Gon ~ Enraged Kurapika >/>> Base Kurapika.

The hunter exam is pretty savage in nature. It definitely weeds out anyone who isn’t fit to become a hunter, but it could almost be considered a death trap.

I don't think that what was fleshed out from Gon in comparison to Kurapika was his strength. More along the lines of sensibility and general calmer and simpler approach to the issues in general... Carefreenes. He standed out the most out of them three, but not due to his strength, necessarily.
