Who DBZ moment surprised or shocked you the most?

If you had kept-up with DragonBall real-time when it was published-in Weekly-Shōnen-Jump & chapter 342 had just been released would you have been able to predict that in the next chapter/week Vegeta would have been shown as an SSJ?

When Vegeta saved Goku from #19, but ends on kind-of a cliff-hanger. The next chapter he transforms.

No I imagine I'd think he'll team up with Piccolo, the humans and the half-saiyan boy, then maybe Future Trunks arrives to help.

When I watched it idk if I knew he goes ssj there. Maybe not, but I don't remember what I was thinking. I could imagine it was like "omg". Those were the days, of massive hype and amazement watching anime for the first time. I wouldn't be into the same way now as the first few anime, when the ideas and style were fresh. I'd feel on the edge of my seat and feel so much thrill and satisfaction from the fights. Downloading 8 episodes of DBZ at a time, keeping the last 8 on my computer afterwards rather than deleting them. Rewatching DBZ clips still brings it somewhat, but when it was new your mind thought anything could happen so every event felt more impactful. Like will Goku emerge from the chamber in time, or will Freeza kill everyone first?

Probably Gohan losing to Bootenks. Went from kicking Boo's ass to utterly being defeated by him. It was kinda depressing to watch; I remember thinking as a kid, "Is he gonna do something cool again?" and he never did do anything cool after that lol.

I was also really surprised when a bunch of Metal Coolas appeared after Gokuu and Vegeeta killed one of them. But I guess the Funimation cover of the movie spoiled it, smh (then again, so did the Japanese title of the movie lol).

The Boo saga was my first introduction to Z in the early 2000s. I'd go with Gotenks/Piccolo getting absorbed by Super Boo, and Kid Boo destroying earth. I remember feeling exactly what Scott described when Gotenks Boo turned the tables on Gohan. When Kid Boo destroyed the earth I assumed Goku or Vegeta would have managed something.

Even more surprising than that was the Anime filler of Boo destroying other planets after that. I was hoping those planets would be wished back but they never were. One of the worst filler moments of DBZ, IMO.

Do you remember if you knew Goku would go SSJ because of Krillin's killing, who Cell is, Gohan beats Cell, who Future Trunks is and Goku has a brother? I think I didn't know about the Cell stuff, not sure about the rest (probs knew about Raditz and maybe Trunks).

I don't believe I knew anything aside from reading about a few things here and there online in like 2003-2004. I got my first laptop in late 2005 and that's when I started marathoning the series repeatedly for years. But yeah that first time I was pretty well clueless as to what would happen, though I obviously knew the Z fighters would win everything since they were still alive in the Boo saga.

But the airing of DBZ was really strange in Canada. It's like they only had the rights to show the Boo saga as they continually would replay it over and over. And it would never get to the end of the show, it would always cut off after Kid Boo formed. I knew the Boo saga inside out from SSJ3 Goku up until Kid Boo lol.

That's actually similar to here in the very late 90s (actually it was the year 2000 apparently), where they just replayed the same Vegeta and Freeza Saga episodes. I'm reading that it reached the 2nd form transformation, and then replayed Z up to that point a couple of times. It did similar for later parts of the series.

Tien vs Semi-Cell is up there. Kid Buu following through with a planet-bust was indeed wild, but his chaotic nature was strongly pushed by the narrative. Who would expect Tien to significantly effect someone that tanked 16, who was the strongest of a group that could wash pre-RoSAT Super Saiyans.

I was surprised when Future Trunks's entire timeline got erased in DBS.

I had a feeling that the Zamasu arc was gonna end on a bittersweet note, but still. They seriously brought Future Trunks back just to make his life worse, oh and he moves to another timeline with another Future Trunks, shit is so stupid smh

That's wild. This guy went through so much, beat the androids, then gets everyone he knows erased. WHAT. And then exists where there's a younger version of himself.
@ahill you said dragon ball is well-done psychologically. They put Trunks through what sounds like an existential nightmare, then don't even delve into it. Should he just treat the new Bulma as his mother? What about his original mother? How about all the world he knew, which now doesn't exist? What's his place in this world, when there's another Trunks there? He has a girl 20 years younger hitting on him, but what about someone his own age? Does anyone even know him in this new world? Nobody knows his memories of the world. Even Bulma doesn't remember him as a kid or anything.
Can't actually imagine how it would be, so it would be tough to write.

DB Super just became a horror series

Really surprised that nobody said Future Trunks coming out of nowhere and killing Frieza till now. Like we've got both Frieza AND his father (that we didn't know about beforehand) headed towards Earth. Our main cast seems to be completely boned and the planet toast. Then this guy we've never seen before comes out of nowhere and goes SSJ at a point where only Goku had done it up to that point and dispenses of both effortlessly. Made my kid brain melt when I first saw it lol.
