I also do have [mecha freeza arc] Vegeta at noticeably ahead Goku's base power vs Freeza, so if Vegeta became a SSj in the future and 2 arms Gohan is logically > him, we'd be looking at pretty big gaps here.

I know the anime scene is a plot hole, I'm just saying that it made more sense to me with how sure Vegeta was about the SSJ being what's given to defeat Freeza, plus the fact that he wanted Goku to become a SSJ.
