Did the Z Senshi know 50% Goku wasn't his max?

What do you think? I used to believe the Z Senshi saw 50% Goku as his max, but Dagon posted this scan from Kai back on Neo that implies otherwise:

I think the likes of Vegeta, Trunks and Piccolo probably thought Goku has some more power but they just wondered that why Goku was so relaxed about him being weaker than Cell and do nothing about it.

Hyperbole is far different from a very clear statement.

As for the topic, I wouldn't say it changes the gap between CG Vegeta/Trunks and 50% Goku at all. Vegeta was in the Rosat at that time, so his statement at the Cell Games needn't apply to this, plus having him and Trunks much further above 50% Goku is pretty troublesome when Cell treats them as though they don't matter all compared to Mr. Protagonist.

The statement was made right after Goku powered up to 50% though. Vegeta was there.

With the absence of him in the image, I just assumed he was already in the Rosat.

It could be that Vegeta simply didn't believe Trunks or Piccolo's (can't really tell from the image which one is saying it) judgement here. To him, what reason would Goku have to hold back if bothering displaying his power at all, or why were Trunks/Piccolo sure Goku wasn't going all out?

Sounds like conjecture. Is there even anything implying Vegeta can't be far above 50% Goku?

Never seen that screen cap. I’ve always believed the same. I don’t see what logical reason Goku would have for displaying his full power to Karin. Why would he show all of his cards before the battle? Cell could’ve made a remark like, “I’ve sensed your power already and you’re no match for me.” It seemed to be understood that it wasn’t his full power.

Kai is irrelevant.

Even if you wanted to argue they thought Goku was holding back, their reactions when he finally revealed his true power against Cell say everything. They clearly weren't expecting Goku to have been holding back THAT much.

I think they suspected it. Goku was so nonchalant about the whole thing that the rest of the guys definitely knew something was up.

I feel that’s a bit much. The way Vegeta was acting about Goku’s full power makes me think he’s not 80%. I’d say more like..

50% Goku: 50
Expected Goku: 65
Vegeta post: 70
Trunks post: 65
Piccolo: 55

Piccolo being 70% seems like a lot too.

Piccolo isn't even 50% of Goku, let alone 70%.

Anyways, how serious should we take this segment from Kai? Sure, it's not in the manga at all. But it doesn't really hurt with the manga's POV and it's quick enough that it doesn't smell like time-eating filler.

In the manga I more or less got the feeling it was like

Piccolo- Holy crap Goku is strong now... He and presumably Cell have a power that seems to be untouchable.

Piccolo- (As he is nearing 50% Goku's power) I'm getting stronger. Perhaps I will have a chance to play a role in the upcoming Cell Game. However, knowing Goku, he probably has more in the tank. Hmmm, come to think of it, he probably has a lot more in the tank. Damn you Goku for always making me so irrelevant.

And I think Piccolo meditates on that thought while training until he comes to the realization that he is indeed garbage, but he only believes it 90% of the way. He comes out and acts cocky like he knows, but he was hoping he was wrong.

Trunks complete shock shows that he suspected nothing.

Trunks probably tells Vegeta later who dismisses the notion, but the fear of doubt creeps in over the last 10 days and it starts to dawn on him that they are probably right. Which is why he has faux confidence heading into the Cell Game and acts cocky, but he knows deep down, Goku has his beat once again.

And if we go by the statement posted in the OP, everyone knew Goku wasn't at FP from the get go. So going with your theory we'd end up with Piccolo at like 60-70% of Goku... Doesn't sit well with how powerful he's portrayed to be.

In the end of the volume, we get the definitive assessment of ability. All others are knocked down, only Vegeta, Trunks and Piccolo remain. Vegeta and Trunks appear to be battle worn, but both are still standing. Piccolo is in far worse condition, appearing to be laboring while standing. He's been in a much tougher battle.

No, Piccolo is only around 50% Goku... Only Trunks and Vegeta surpass 50% Goku and it's nothing that crazy either...
