The movie starts off with flashbacks to planet Vegeta. It's rushed (the movie is rushed and disjointed in general too), while still taking up a large portion of the movie, this resulted from the fact that the film tried to show both Goku and Broly's backstories, as well as the destruction of the Saiyan race, a small plot point from Bardock, and a scene where Freeza introduces himself to the Saiyans. There;s too much, and because of it, there's barely any focus on any of the content. The inclusion of Goku's origin story baffles me particularly, it isn't important to the actual plot of the film, and only serves to weaken Goku's character by turning him into Superman. Bardock was completely worthless in this film, and after watching the Bardock special it's depressing seeing how gutted Minus Bardock is compared to the original.
Goku's as dumb as he's portrayed to be in Super, nothing more needs to be said. Freeza's character in this film is a joke plain and simple. His motivations on wanting to grow taller completely contradict his actual motivations, immortality, which at this point should be a greater priority for him than it ever has been. He also gets raped by Broly for an hour too. Broly is surprisingly enough, the best part of the film. He has an actual character, and the movie spends some time fleshing him out. However, by the time the fight rolls around he reverts back to a screaming raging brute with no personality. So the movie, wastes it's one good card.
For the main draw of the film, the fights, they're not particularly good. However, Vegeta V Broly is definitely the best fight out of everything in the film, the animation is great, but not over the top, and the choreography is easy to follow, while tedious the film also slowly goes through each of Vegeta's forms, (skipping SSJ2), before he finally ends up with SSJG as Broly gets stronger. After that Vegeta just kind of disappears and waits on the sidelines to watch Goku's fight Broly, it's really sad. Goku's battle with Broly was a joke. Base/SSJ Goku performed better than even SSJG Vegeta did against the empowered Broly. The fight also gets harder to follow with crazier camera angles, at one point the camera just sort of becomes a first person view of Broly, before drifting back and becoming a close angle, all in the same shot.
All the while, the movie has a lightning fast pace, meaning that it's just action, action, action with no time to take any breaks or let the action sink in. If you have ellipsey, I wouldn't recommend watching the film.
The movie also has a lot of scenes where it pretends to have tension, to give weight to moments. One of these moments comes when SSJG Goku is getting trashed by Broly, there's sad music playing, it gets right into how battered Goku is. However, it's completely hollow, as Goku could transform into SSJB at any moment. It's just a waste of time. After that, Vegeta joins in to fight with Goku against Broly, it gets harder and harder to keep up with the fight. Ugly CGI also starts to crop up around this moment.
Goku and Vegeta also just run from the battle when it's clear Broly's beating their asses, and leave him to beat the shit out of Freeza (for one whole fucking hour.). They show up to Piccolo, who's randomly in this film, Goku suggests fusion, but Vegeta refuses, and is only persuaded by the mention of Bulma (as if Vegeta wasn't stale enough as it is). Vegeta and Goku fail the fusion 2 times, which creates skinny Gogeta and fat Gogeta (they literally reused Gotenks failing the fusion dance gag.)
Broly is also fighting Whis who's laughing and effortlessly dodging his blows, another reminder of how little of a threat Broly really is. Gogeta shows up, and it's the worst fight in the movie by far, the animators went too over the top with this fight. It's a cluster fuck of spinning camera angles, non stop lightning fast action, endless amount of colours. At one point they're fight breaks them into a dimension, and for a long period Gogeta and Broly are just two ugly cgi figures fighting. After that Broly gets beaten by Gogeta, and is wished away before he can be killed. The end.
What a shit movie.
