It may just mean Illumi and Hisoka wanted to have their time and enjoy themselves in the exam a little more.

Illumi literally hid in a hole to avoid losing the badges. He wasn't portrayed to be worlds above the other Hunter wannabes like Hanzo, etc.

Hisoka was also said to be far above Gon but not insanely above him in the Heavens Arena (AFTER Nen was introduced), but that got retconned later seeing as he was still far above post-CA arc Killua by the Election arc and slaughtered swaths of professional Hunters without taking a scratch.

Illumi and Hisoka definitely got retcon power ups

Nen's foreshadowing, again, is shoehorned in retroactively just like Haki. You also only need to watch that fight between that faggot "examiner Hunter" and Hisoka to see that Nen was never thought up until after the exams had finished.

The examiner is the only inconsistency. Even if it wasn't planned out at the beginning, being able to use instances prior to make it seem like it has always existed is good writing in my book.

However, he definitely planned it at the end of the Hunter Exam arc with Illumi's Ren.

Illumi wanted to take a nap in peace.

Hanzo also tried to avoid Hisoka and Illumi more than once iirc. He knew who not to mesh with.

Hisoka could have also gotten a little stronger in the meantime. I imagine he trains. Plus, he grew a number on Togashi's chart.

Illumi's Ren could've been retroactively explained as hypnosis or similar. The most blatant foreshadowing of Nen, which is when Togashi probably had it in his mind for real, is when Satotz refers to the secret exam. I imagine that's around the point he decided he needed a power system. And even then he still didn't have the precise mechanics down as late as Kurapika vs Uvogin.

It still looks stupid when retroactively applying Nen to pretty much any of the first 2-3 volumes' events. Hisoka got scratched up just from being whacked with Gon's fish bait in the 2nd volume, which is utterly impossible for any skilled Nen user. He also wouldn't be using Zetsu in the middle of a fight.

Something like Goku's Saiyan heritage reveal is a much better retcon, considering that it fits with virtually everything right down to his inhumanly durable constitution, Oolong speculating he could be an alien, and him being found in the woods by Grandpa Gohan rather than a conflicting backstory like a lot of Shonen (ex: the origin of the Millennium Items in YGO).

Yeah Togashi clearly came up with the more advanced mechanics like Ken and Ko later than that fight, plus a professional Nen using Floor Master like Kastro using a Hatsu that is so obviously in conflict with his actual Nen affinity is pure garbage when considering it was shown that Palm's Nen was causing her water to overflow even when she wasn't attempting to divine her Nen affinity (meaning it's very common knowledge what one's Nen affinity and the appropriate application for Hatsu is).

Kastro was not a Floor Master I don't think. He was just 1 win away from challenging one.

Hey man, sometimes power scaling needs to take a backseat (somewhat at least) for a more interesting story. It is what it is :idk

Oh yeah he was on the verge of becoming one rather than being one already when Hisoka killed him. Still, the fact that a noob like that karate kid Wing was training knows his proper Nen affinity and application despite not having a Hatsu yet shows his inefficient ability was poor writing to essentially "guide" the reader into the concept of drawing out maximum strength from choosing a more efficient power.

My beef is that Hisoka simply saying in the Heavens Arena that he used Zetsu whenever he fought them in the Hunter Exams, implying Illumi did the same when he got his arm broken by an injured Gon, would make much more sense than the actual stuff we got :ladd

It's quite similar to how a lot of people have a problem with Beerus having been made retroactively hundreds of times stronger than BoG SSJG Goku. Makes very little sense to consider someone who is still an absolute joke to you a challenge.

Well, Hisoka could have simply not being using nen at that instance, no? He was killing random ppl.

Nen still protects your body at all times after you've unlocked your nodes. Otherwise the Phantom Troupe members would be getting killed from random mafia enemy bullets that graze their arteries or some shit.

Well Gon could also affect Netero with his sneakers. While that was also in the 1st arc, Netero was always thought to be wayyy above Gon.

That's probably a gag similar to Chi-Chi cutting Roshi's skull up with her helmet blade. Remember that Netero is a Roshi reference in various ways, just like Gon is a Goku reference.

That was in the take the ball scene, didn't seem like an one off scene, specially since Killua almost broke his leg by kicking Netero's.

Logically if Killua can't damage his leg despite being able to cut Hunter examinees to pieces with his bare hands the shoe couldn't have hurt that much in a serious scene.

Maybe because the shoes came off unexpectedly whereas Netero was expecting Killua to kick him.

That would just prove Nen wasn't planned back then since a top tier Nen user like Netero wouldn't get injured by some shoe attack because he wasn't expecting it. That karate kid Wing was training kept tanking Killua's attacks despite being weaker, and he's fodder.

Not expecting it is a reason good enough. You won't mount the best offensive guard when not expecting the attack. Similarly, Hisoka wasn't expecting Gon's attack with the fishing rod. It slightly fazed his face. Barely anything to make Hisoka's power being changed as way bigger afterwards imo.
