From the sounds of it, you sure you aren't played Budokai 2 instead of Tenkaichi 2? Your experience sounds far more like the former.

That said, if you want an easy way to get through the story mode, choose Goten and Trunks and have one of them meet with the other and Goku on the map. It'll boost their defence tremendously to the extent you can even beat Pure Boo in the final stage without losing a health bar.
