Man I remember in like 2002, 2003, or 2004 (can't remember the exact year) stumbling across the SSJ5 design and being so hyped that a new DB series was in development. I was at the age where I couldn't distinguish or doubt things that were fake on the internet so "DBAF" was a huge rumor among DB fans at that time.

I'm not sure who created the design, I think it was some guy from Spain (I remember a video claiming that, ,might have been Geekdom 101). The design is a huge part of the "internet lore" of DB rumors which is fascinating.

It's in the spoiler-tag about the person who created it.

I remember hearing the rumour too IIRC (maybe from friends in school/play-ground or something) & we didn't have internet. It was big lol.

Yep, it was definitely the school playground where we would talk about things like DBAF and how DBGT wasn't actually the end of Dragon Ball.

Kinda miss that era. There was so much mystery behind it until Super came out and like, I kinda wish it could have stayed that way lol.

For sure. DB-Super was soooooo disappointing. Even younger me would have been disappointed I think.

An interesting story from back when social media wasn't really a thing and the internet was still young. I don't think something like that would be so infamous if it happened today.

It reminds me of the 2010 YouTube videos "Goku SSJ-SSJ10 transformations" :troll

Same. Back when I was in the 4th grade in 2002, I thought another DB series was in development because of some bullshit I read on a third rate fansite online :cena

Kinda miss those days. These days I can't wait for the franchise to be laid to rest because of how mnay retcons and idiotic plot holes/goofs we see

I was 1st/2nd grade in 2002. Yeah, I remember going on those weird fansites that claimed a new DB series would be coming out in like, the following year and it had the "pictures" to prove it. There was so much mystery because we were prone to believing all the nonsense on the web back then. I miss those days.

Honestly, I do kinda wish DB would have stayed finished after DBZ/DBGT. I miss the days were fans got to fill in the gaps & holes whereas now it's just a bunch of retcons and almost a reframing of the entire narrative of Dragon Ball. Still, I can't lie Super did give us some cool stuff here and there even if it was largely a let down.

I hadn't even watched GT before I heard the AF rumors. GT actually sounded really good on paper, what with an alien whose race was wiped out by the Saiyans being out for revenge, a Super #17 manufactured in Hell (mind you I was 10 in 2002), and evil Dragons created from DB abuse. On top of Super Saiyan 4. But then you actually watch GT and it's just the most painfully boring DB series, to the point that it's hard to believe the same company that animated the final fight of DBZ created this shortly after.

And Super was low-budget filth that became higher-budget maelstroms of retcons with occasional good fights. I'd probably rather rewatch it than GT but it has even bigger problems with the narrative. Although if I was 11-12 when watching Super, who knows? I might have vastly preferred it then since it's at least consistently entertaining by comparison.

The original artist, David Montiel Franco, can be found on Twitter at Tablos.AF. He's a talented guy.

I'm pretty sure that my first exposure to "AF" was in 1999. Of course, someone, somewhere read that someone, somewhere was related to Toriyama and they confirmed that it was real. You know how kids are.

Then, Toyble totally ripped off Franco's AF name and Super Saiyan 5 design... But, you know how kids are lol

Lots and lots of fun memories that will never, ever happen again. This wave caught the internet in the perfect time for this--the internet was a thing and got this rumor out to the fans, and yet, it was so primitive that there was still so much mystique over anything that happened in Japan. There was no real way to confirm anything.

I knew that AF was fake because of all the poorly Photoshopped pictures that surfaced. I thought that the "Super Saiyan 5 Goku" design was drawn by Toriyama.

It kind of sucks that the word "hoax" is so synonymous with AF and the Super Saiyan 5 design, as if it was on purpose. No. It was a kid submitting fan-art to a magazine, which was taken by others and turned into a whole thing.
