In terms of writing, One Piece has indeed a case of the student surpassing the master. Far better use of secondary characters, better constructed plots, and overall more creativity.

But in terms of popularity and influence, Dragon Ball is still king. The One Piece manga may have sold more copies but the Dragon Ball franchise sells more overall and is still more globally recognizable across multiple generations.

As a Manga, One Piece surpassed it in sales. As a Franchise, I think Dragon Ball is still more popular.
