No.17: “Our turn? …Heh heh heh… Sorry to disappoint you…but I didn’t even use half my power when we fought before.”

Context: after knocking Trunks out
Gohan: “If you died, then there wouldn’t be any more warriors to save the Earth…You’re the last warrior with the potential to be capable of defeating those androids after a few years…”

Yep. That's everything. Gohan is taking out an insurance policy, but he feels strong enough to encounter them on his own for sure. He clearly isn't hunting them down to prove himself like Trunks was 3 years later, but the situation came, he was strong enough to realistically take both Androids down.

Gohan's comment towards Trunks seems a little weird. "You’re the last warrior with the potential to be capable of defeating those androids after a few years…”[.] Doesn't it imply Gohan hasn't the potential to do it?

Trunks: “Knowing your strength, Goku, I have a little hope.”

Trunks says Goku was even better than the rumors has suggested, when he knew not even Gohan had hoped to reach his father's strength, and Trunks was only slightly more powerful than Gohan was.

Goku also gives Trunks hope, which seems off if he was only moderately stronger than Trunks was.

He's a major character in terms of power levels. He begins the chain to close the gap from Goku Namek to Yardrat Goku, Gohan's power is important here to stabilize the levels of Goku vs Freeza, which is perhaps the two most important power levels in the series, so yea, he's kind of a big deal.

I dunno about 2 arms Gohan... he can be as strong as Namek Goku, I guess. 1 arm Gohan is stronger than Namek Goku and Mecha Freeza, although not as strong as [killing Mecha Freeza] Trunks.

The questions then becomes, how did the Androids and Gohan fight? Did Vegeta become a Super Saiyan? If so, how much stronger than Goku Namek was he? If at all. Also, why would Gohan attack them? Did they just run into him one day?

I doubt Vegeta was a SSJ. Without Trunks to prove there is no "The one" Vegeta wouldn't have the right motivation.

You could very well be right. Next question becomes, can we really picture the new incredible villain as being weaker than Freeza? Doesn't really fit with the narrative that AT generally pushes. Imagine the Future Saga. The Androids are coming, oh they are so powerful, but Goku and Freeza would have crushed them. Doesn't really fit imo.
