I had this theory for a little while that if Gohan was able to become ssj2 against kibito was maybe because he was really angry about losing his student and peaceful life.
Like" I lost my childhood saving the universe.I did my part. All this was over and I was finally realizing my dream. It was supposed to be a nice tournament enjoying my father's return and now it happens? Dammit! Why?"
After that I suppose he was not as angry against Dabura. It was not his first villain. Nothing special about him.
Against kibito, it was more like the initial rage.
And who could get angry watching fat buu for the first time?
