How do we not have a thread on Trigun, and Vash The Stampede?

Trigun was one of those anime I would always see pics of online when I was a kid back in the 2000s, but I never felt compelled to watch it. I probably stumbled upon it on Adult Swim a few times, maybe. The one thing that stood out to me was how Vash basically looked like a Super Saiyan with his spiky blonde hair.

I remember back in, like, 2017, I watched 1-2 episodes of Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Big O each. None of them wowed me. When it came to Trigun, I felt Vash's personality was too much like Gokuu's, and what I read of his background on Wikipedia seemed too convoluted. I mean,
Vash isn't a human, but a sentient "plant"? Shit is weird. I'd have preferred him to just be a human cyborg (or at least a bio-android. I guess that's not much different to him being a sentient "plant", but ... why not just call him a human when he looks just like one? Call him a superhuman or something. "Plant" sounds weird, and reading up on how Vash's species works, it seems really convoluted). And what's the point of the series taking place not on Earth ... but a planet that's just like Earth? It's so tacky. It should be kinda post-apocalyptic or something; most of Earth would be ravaged by war, so what remains looks like the Wild Wild West.

Still, I've been watching the anime lately and I'm enjoying it. I prefer it to Cowboy Bebop. Maybe one day it'll get a live action adaption? Kek. I've heard good things about the manga, too, and some say it's one of the best manga ever.

Just finished it.

I will say Cowboy Bebop had a more memorable finale, but Trigun is still the better series.

Ah, I was pleasantly surprised to learn Trigun had an animated film in 2010. Just finished watching it, although I might have to watch it again since I was falling to sleep lol. Not to knock on the film; I just haven't been sleeping well lately.

Alright, I watched the parts I slept through. I like the more modern art and animation, but this film was boring, lol. The only remotely memorable part was the new waifu character. I gotta say, Vash's simping was a lot more insufferable here. I can tolerate him following a girl around, begging her to be his, but ... invading her personal space, trying to go in for a kiss, removing her glove and boot so he can rub his face against her hand and foot? This qualifies as sexual harassment, and the movie tries to pass it off as endearing. Huge cringe.

I was already turned off by Vash's goofiness in the TV series, and this movie turns his worst quality up a notch. And the plot's utterly forgettable; the villains sucked (the main villain is more or less a rehash of, what was his name ... *goes on the Trigun Wiki* ... "Brilliant Dynamites Neon" from episodes 7-8). The most memorable aspect about Trigun is seeing Vash do cool shit, but there was none of that here. You never really see Vash's serious, non-goofy side. And there was never a moment where it really felt like he was in danger or challenged by anyone. He's just a dumb simp for basically the whole film, then he easily defeats the main villain right at the end.

Yeah, this film sucked. Cowboy Bebop's film was better. Both come across like glorified standalone episodes, but at least we got to see Spike do what he does best in Bebop's film. I think I'll pass on the reboot series Trigun Stampede. I guess it seems well-made for what it is, but I personally don't care for the CGI look.

The 2023 anime was good. Some great CGI close ups and the trippy torture part in one episode was unique. The CGI was overall the best I've seen, alongside Dorohedoro, once I got used to it. The plot is alright, the environmental theme was done pretty well I guess. More style than substance, but I'm fine with that nowadays, unlike around 10 years ago. Was a worthwhile watch. I'd even consider watching it again. I only watch 1-3 animes a year. Not as good as Mob Psycho, Dandadan or Dorohedoro, but after that the most worthwhile I've watched since 2020. A bit more worthwhile in hindsight than Chainsaw Man or Beastars.

Wolfwood's backstory was very well done in Stampede. Episode 6 was a great episode.
Good shot selection/camera work. CGI faces in ep 1 kinda weird, like the girl looking embarrassed apparently looked out of place. Also looked video gamey in early episodes. I don't remember, just looked up what I wrote on here and MAL before.

I don't see the point in a CGI remake with new character designs. I'd have preferred them to make a more faithful adaption of the manga with modern 2D art and animation. Maybe a few CGI bits here and there.

The 2010 movie is the best Trigun ever looked.

It's also a different story

We may never get an accurate adaptation of the manga.

Some people say Trigun is one of the greatest manga ever.

Did the anime really change a lot? I appreciate that they condensed the story to 26 episodes.

I also gotta say, Vash's "killing is wrong" shtick was pretty annoying lol. Funny how a character can be both kinda awesome and totally cringe. One side of him is a badass gunslinger who you can't get enough of, the other side is a goofball simp who you just want to shut the hell up.

Personality-wise, Spike Spiegel is definitely better than Vash. Spike felt a little too tryhard-cool, but he wasn't really annoying.

But I read Vash is less annoying in the manga so I'll check it out

Skimming through the manga, I guess Vash isn't as annoying but the only other difference I can tell is that the order of events is different lol

The manga's artwork is rather sloppy, too.

Yeh that's true, it's weird that no adaptation follows the manga fully. I wonder why that is. The first anime series I guess the manga wasn't finished so they made up the story? The Stampede anime maybe the industry has just fallen out of favour of long series? I remember thinking eems they seemed to be appealing to younger tastes. They gave MC a modern hairstyle.

The manga art was all smudged looking when I checked circa 2015, wanting to read it. It was so messy I couldn't read it so thought I'd wait for better scans, but maybe it was just a mess irrespective of scan quality.

The 1998 anime didn't have much filler. It just rearranges the order of events, changes a couple of details, and leaves some stuff out so the series could finish in 26 episodes. The manga's plot isn't that different from what I can tell.

Trigun, or not. If you reply in one of my threads, I'll find your post and I'll like it. In turn, if I like a post outside one of my threads, I'll like it. There's nothing you, or any other shaved ape, can do about that.

Watched one episode of Stampede. Wasn't feeling it.

I don't mind the character redesigns, but the CGI art style isn't my thing.

Wait I'm confused

So the anime came out before most of the manga chapters did, which is why some stuff is different from the manga. I guess the author just gave the anime staff rough plot outlines like Toriyama do with Super, and he decided to do things differently for the manga

EDIT: Having looked more into it, a lot of stuff is different in the manga, actually. The anime adapted a couple of arcs and chapters from the manga, but ended up doing its own thing because there wasn't enough material from the manga to adapt: https://www.reddit.com/r/Trigun/comments/116rej0/_/j9855rb
