Simple question. What filler material in the original two series did you find to grind your gears the most? Doesn't have to be just one. Feel free to list a couple.

Inb4 "All of It" posts.

Plot-wise, either the extended bullshit on Namek (particularly where Vegeta meets SSJ Galu) or Piccolo destroying Galu's spaceship.

Fight consistency-wise, either Mr. Popo vs. SSJ kids or the Cell Jr. fight, closely followed by all of DBS/GT :troll or Mutaito > Galu.

Might as well post some of my own now...

Colonel Silver's resources - The decision to give Silver so many soldiers hinders a lot of aspects of the narrative. It not only makes his defeat against Goku ridiculously anti-climactic (at which point his additional forces have inexplicably disappeared, no less), but also makes a lot of the forces of superior officers seem underwhelming. White seemingly only had a couple of dozen jobber soldiers as did Blue, so Silver having what seems to be an entire legion is utterly absurd.

The Wedding Dress filler - Leaving aside the hole of how the dress survived the previous fire and Roshi's Kamehameha, the whole plot with the Octagon is quite possibly the biggest plot convenience in the series. Somehow, a couple of items from going to locations with characters who had no idea about the furnace leads to Chichi gaining all the items needed to block the furnace's hole like some dumb JRPG quest. It also doesn't help that this is what's used to end the original anime on and not the more climactic finale of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.

Fake Namek - Just utterly pointless. Most of the filler that came before it at least provided experiences to have the characters grow as either fighters or people, such as Goku's 22nd TB training or Gohan's adventures in the wilderness. This provides nothing other than wasting time and is also completely out of place in terms of the build up portion of an arc, as it neither provides any threat compared to the battle with the Saiyans nor build up for the battles to come. At least some of the contradictive fights such as Mutaito > Goku or Pure Boo being the strongest Boo helped offer some kind of build up in their narrative, rather than being a vapid time waster.

Garlic Jr. Arc - I would've actually found this to be OK as far as filler goes in concept, with it offering the Z-Warriors to shine without Galu there for once. In execution though, it falls apart completely by trying to put a Movie villain into the anime's canon when his movie can't possibly occur in the main timeline. We can't assume things happened differently in this timeline either, since Movie 1 footage is reused for flashbacks. It also didn't help the way Garlic Jr. was defeated was the most anticlimactic in the entire series. All it took was to destroy a nearby planet that even Kuririn could've probably done if not for Gohan being the last one standing. Also, mind control's always a boring trope.

Inside Boo filler - The powerscaling inconsistencies are too apparent to even bother mentioning. Not just that, but the entire thing is just so boring, beyond some humour in Vegeta having a fear of tapeworms, there was nothing to keep it engaging. Even having Gohan, Gotenks and Piccolo be mind controlled would've been better than just illusions, since that'd at least offer some sense of tension when Goku and Vegeta are fighting them.

There's also numerous fights and smaller moments such as Mutaito VS Goku, Ginyu in Bulma's Body, Vegeta seeing SSJ Goku on Namek, Popo showing the pecking order to the kids or Pure Boo being the strongest Boo, but all those moments were pretty minor in terms of screentime, so they'd fall a tier below these picks imo.

Garlic Jr. was also terrible for its placement. We just got to see the awesome Super-Saiyan Goku and then we don't get to see him again until this saga was over. Like just get this over with and show us Super-Saiyan. Definitely felt like that when I was younger and still does.

If anything, it's placement was one of it's better aspects as it left more breathing room. After all, the idea of topping Super Saiyan and Freeza felt nearly impossible at this point (and ended up being improbable when the Artificial Humans did it with Saiyan Arc data), so having the realisation that topping such power wasn't the point if such power wasn't around in the first place made sense. You could even say that the over-reliance on Goku and Gohan coming into his own as a hero could be seen as build up for the Cell Arc's finale if you stretch it.

Rest of the arc was still :trash though (other than Maron's body, I guess).

We still could have had random adventures with Goku or just showing-off Super-Saiyan. :troll :troll :troll

The footage is only a few seconds. That doesn't mean we must assume the rest of the movie has to have happened
exactly the same in canon. Besides, Movie 1 is one of the easiest to fit in the canon timeline. The only inconsistencies
are...
-Gohan's enraged power: We can assume it's the 710 suppression, not the 1307 max, which explains why Piccolo was
surprised anew at Gohan's power against Raditz.
-Krillin not knowing Gohan at BOZ: A rock falls on Krillin's head towards the end of movie 1 and he gets unconscious.
It's not unreasonable to deduce that hit caused him some amnesia regarding recent events.

That would be Movie 9.

Piccolo's reaction to Gohan destroying a small hill after the Raditz fight says otherwise in terms of him being used to Gohan's latent power in general.

Goku met with Roshi and Bulma as well beforehand which would contradict not only them not knowing of Gohan, but the meet up at Kame House during the Saiyan Arc not being their first time meeting in a long time as it's said to be. Unless you're going to assume something so outlandish as Roshi and Bulma getting amnesia as well and becoming separated from each other during this time, then Movie 1 obviously can't fit into the timeline whatsoever.

1. Destructive feats are inconsistent at Early DB-BOZ. Piccolo's supposed trump card against Goku and last resort against Raditz
could only destroy a chunk of a mountain.

2. A long time might as well be a few months. Also, Roshi/Bulma did not meet Gohan at movie 1.

The Makankosappo was a very small ranged piercing attack, hardly one to compare this to.

Goku seemed to still inform them on what he was doing, which would mean they'd know Goku had a son. Also, I doubt Roshi would act they way he did saying that it was "too long" since they last met if they'd met just a couple of months ago.

Not to mention, Goku's always disappeared for 3-5 years at a time to train. Meeting once in a few months would actually be uncharacteristic of them except in situations where they're faced with a threat.

Fillers that I can think of off the top of my head.

- Goku going back to the past and meeting the younger versions of the masters (He fought Mutaito and lost even with the God water power up)
- Kaio explaining the origin of the Saiyans
- Gohan turning Oozaru a second time and explaining that Goku's space pod is the source of his transformation to which Piccolo destroys it (which contradicts the fact that the space pod was used to help Briefs create the spaceship for Goku to travel to Namek)
- Princess Snake
- Fake Namek
- A large portion of the Freeza fight
- Garlic Jr. (Introduces a movie villain despite the fact that it can't fit into the timeline)
- Inside Boo's Stomach
- Dragon Ball Super

You could assume that this past was a simulation of the past and Mutaito's strength was altered. After all, it being a genuine timeline would contradict a lot in the Cell Arc.

- Kaio explaining the origin of the Saiyans
I don't really see much of a problem with the history and it's lies, since Kaio wouldn't just tell Goku about Freeza when he wanted to make sure he wouldn't try to fight him. What I dislike about this filler, however, is that Kaio mentioned the Oozaru transformation when Goku's reaction to Vegeta using it shows it was a completely new revelation.

I'm not sure if Kaio had known Goku enough to know of his habit of wanting to fight strong opponents.

Gohan's adventures in the wild before training with Piccolo I didn't really like
Goku's extended time in getting to Kaio-Sama
Fake Namek
80% of GT
Mr. Popo vs. Goten/Trunks (Can't stand the "Popo Pecking Order" stuff TFS started, and seeing it in the comment section of Mr. Popo videos on YouTube does get pretty annoying).
