The Shichibukai being disbanded was alluded to several times prior in the manga. I’m curious to see what happens to all of them. It looks like Buggy is currently under attack lol

It's the rank below Vice Admiral, just below Commodre (the rank Smoker was from post-Alabasta until the timeskip).
I'd say Coby having Haki (something that's only a requirement for all Vice Admirals) and being in the perfect position to develop it when working directly under Garp are sufficient explanations for his rise in status over 2 years.

He's only a year younger than Luffy, so him being a prodigy (which seems to have been made pretty clear at Marineford) works to some extent. It's not as if the rank of Commodore below it is consistently impressive anyway, considering Commodre Pudding Pudding got killed by Chew of all people

They'll most likely just end up being inconsequential to the plot and just some name drops to enrich the history somewhat, though the former is likely inspired by Long John Silver from Treasure Island whilst the latter is named after a real-life 16th Century Chinese pirate captain.

Ok, at least Garp had to join forces with a pirate to defeat them, but still.. I’m assuming this will be Roger, but knowing Oda it was probably Don Chinjao

Either way, unless Kaido, Big Mom and Shiki were all far weaker back then, this makes no sense.. We already saw Garp barely defeating Shiki with Sengoku’s backup.
