EMIYA made a good post regarding Vegeta's character and I totally agree with it:
"Vegeta's regressions are absolutely awful because there's a legitimately good character behind all this. Whenever Vegeta isn't trying to suck Goku's c*** or prove his foolish pride to everyone, he's one of the best characters in the series. One of my favorite Vegeta moment in Super is when Goku, being the unlikable dick that he is, tries to get Vegeta to train.
And in a rare moment of character development, Vegeta personally refuses, saying that he needs to be there for his wife and daughter's birth. This along with his interaction with Bra is amazing character development for Vegeta. Vegeta is legitimately giving up (even for just a moment) something he loves to do, in this case training, to actually be a good husband and father. In scenes like these, he is a far better father and husband than Goku, even at his best, will ever be. There's a good level of heartwarming seeing Vegeta get upset when Bra cries, changes her diaper, holds her and while we don't know, it would've been funny to see what crazy Saiyan vegetable name he had in mind.
GT Vegeta is the same. There's none of that arrogant, got to do whatever Goku is doing so I can be better. In fact he's like an old man trying to be "hip" with the kids. You groan at times but there's a humorous charm to it. Plus, this is the Vegeta who actively tells Goku to fuse with him. Yes, Vegeta is so secure with himself in this iteration that he personally offers the idea to fuse with Goku. Then, when it looks as if Goku is dead, Vegeta somberly tells Trunks to get everyone away from Earth.
These genuinely good Vegeta moments are therefore squandered by the loads and loads of arrogant "suck my pride" Vegeta moments that unfortunately the fans seem to want lick up like a dog 7 days without water."
Given that, this chapter seems to showcase another instance in which Vegeta's character sadly regresses, featuring him again with this obsession towards Goku... which to me doesn't seem to match his overall demeanor at the end of Z, where he understood Goku and admitted him as his superior. Going on and on about how he can't take being the 2nd one, raging inside whenever he sees Goku breaking through another barrier all don't go in line with how he should be portrayed. Not to mention the overall, at least imo, lack of tension behind the fights in general, which don't provide excitement for us readers.
Vegeta's power up wasn't addressed either, much like in the anime. Whis just loosely stated that such is akin for Vegeta to achieve instead of UI, but didn't go in depth about the mechanics of the power up. It seems to be the usual "breaking through limits" that it's present in the anime.
There's #17's explosion as well, which doesn't seem to differ too much from the anime version of the scene, with the difference of #18's differing reactions in both medias. Maybe due to already happening in the anime, I didn't feel touched by such scene at all... doesn't even compare with Chaozu's self destruction or Majin Vegeta's one as far as emotional moments go.
And it consists basically of this, with the worst part being Vegeta's apparent regression. Another chapter that was bottom tier
level to me. 2/10.
I find even the anime more entertaining at this point. Reading a chapter through a month is already a struggle to me. Screw Toyotaro.
