I don't remember any examples of dodging lasers pre-skip. Maybe against a Pacifista which has a charge time before shooting.

If the chain is Kaido > Mihawk > Oden, then he'd see him as a formidable opponent but not necessarily someone he'd ever lose to. Equal is kinda stretching it in my opinion.
After some thinking I think Kaido’s admiration for Oden was more about the fact that he was the first to challenge his self image of being an invincible monster. Not that he was an opponent that he felt inferior to.
