Nah, I haven't even heard of it until now
I'd highly recommend it, the series being my 2nd favourite manga (Joe being 1st). The series has a structure somewhat similar to a Shonen in it's action and the threats gradually escalating, though shows it's place as an anachronistic Seinen through each new villain also escalating in their psychology and depth, with the murders and thieves of the early chapters being far different than demi-godlike beings debating on cosmological matters towards the end of Part 2. As I said, Alita is one of the best female characters in anime/manga (or fiction in general) due to not purely being defined by her gender and overall having an interesting development arc with several layers to her personality, being one of the few cases of an amnesiac done right. It's cyberpunk setting that gradually evolves into that of hard sci-fi allows for it to also be a melting pot of various aspects of storytelling as well, plus it has very good world building with the amount of details the author provides in his annotations.
The 2nd part of the series, Last Order, in particular is almost flawless beyond some minor plot conveniences (and even those are excused by the technology in the series) that result in the best tournament arc in manga. Almost all the competition is given good characterisation and justification for their goals to the point the audience can just as well root for a character such as Vilma or Tunpo over Alita and shows just how good of a melting pot the sci-fi genre can be. Most fans tend to hate it compared to the original, though that's only because they care purely for superficial aspects such as the art not having the semi-realistic elements of the first series or not just being their waifu overcoming every opponent. In other words, it's what would happen if the Tournament of Power was written by a genius.
