The chapter starts with Shanks asking Roger a question, and the answer made him cry. It was common knowledge that Roger was at the end of his lifespan so I doubt he was asking about that. More mystery bait from Oda.

It seems that there is more confirmation that One Piece is a joke. Roger laughs at pirates attempting to find it saying something like “if only they knew”.

Disappointing that Orochi’s full takeover of Wano was skipped over. Kaido and Orochi received no backstory. It would have been interesting to see how Orochi would even come in contact with Kaido if the borders were closed. But nope, Oda had to skip to Oden returning, and immediately charging after Orochi once hearing of the state of Wano. It seems like we will learn of Oden’s fate against Kaido soon though which will be interesting.

Chapter had yet more mystery bait, though at least it seemed to at least confirm some things about the One Piece that gets closer to the answer about it. From the fanslations explaining the spelling of the furigana and hirigana used to spell One Piece has it roughly translated as "the great treasure that connects people" or "One Peace". Seems to suggest One Piece is more of a device capable of bringing about world peace in some manner (be it through benevolence or complete totalitarianism) rather than some great riches. Perhaps it will be some kind of key that connects all the ancient weapons or something.

Not keen on fatalism being used yet again to pretty much set in stone Luffy will surpass Roger, unless this destined figure will be one to surprise everyone.

Not as good as the several chapters before it, though still far better than the manga's current events.

I'm very curious as to how Orochi will escape an impending strike from a Yonko+ tier Oden. Is Kaido going to morph through the wall and save his ass?

Maybe this Oden is the previous Mane Mane user acting as his double, explaining how they died so the fruit could eventually become Mr. 2's.

Interesting to see that two of Orochi’s ancestors possess Devil fruits now used by others.

Oda relying on more mystery bait bullshit. Why the fuck does Oden bend over to Orochi after their encounter? We know it isn’t a fake Oden given that he cries at Roger’s death. Yet he waited 5 fucking years to attack Orochi/Kaido. What nonsense! It was stated that Kaido began fighting Gekko Moriah 2 years after Oden’s return, meaning he likely wasn’t at his peak power yet. Why would Oden wait? The narrator stated that he was unrivalled after travelling the seas. What the hell happened between him and Orochi?

It seemed pretty apparent from both the first page and 970 that he was doing it so Kaido wouldn't immediately go after Wano's populous, though that explanation was pretty weak when considering (as we saw) striking Kaido before he could fully amass his forces would make far more sense.
Seeing how Oden lost to Kaido was disappointing. As expected, he was stronger, but immediately let his guard down when seeing Higurashi disguised as Momonosuke, despite knowing her power? Remember back in Alabasta when the Straw Hats were capable of conducting a strategy to counter the Mane Mane user they faced (Mr. 2)? Apparently a seasoned veteran who'd spent years facing various pirate crews and Devil Fruit abilities had less of a mind for a concise battle plan than a small group that'd only been travelling the seas properly for a month or two

970 was garbage. Oda really must be feeling the heat to rush this flashback. The majority of the battle with Kaido was skipped over. We only see Oden attack Kaido once, heavily wounding him. Oden was on the verge of beating him until that old lady posed as Momonosuke to trick him. So I guess it does reaffirm that Oden > Kaido considering he needed trickery to win. Still disappointed by how rushed that entire sequence felt.

And yea, I guess you could say that Kaido would have blown up the capital, but as you pointed out we saw how badly Oden could damage Kaido with one strike. The fact that he waited 5 years to attack is utter nonsense. Kaido would have been partying on Onigashima every day, and there would have been no threat to the public if Oden attacked him there.

It’s quite simply nonsense. The last 2 chapters have damn near ruined the entire flashback for me, which is a shame. I was enjoying it until this point, but Oden was turned into Orochi’s bitch despite being on the Pirate King’s tier of power. You would expect a grand battle between Oden and Kaido based on this, but we are supplied with an extremely rushed fight where we don’t even see any of the retainers getting action. What a joke. This arc is bottom of the barrel trash.
