I still think you're a bit too hard on it. I think it's poorly written, but compared to the Boo Arc, it's superior by a decent margin. It's still the second worst Arc in the Manga though.

If anything, Kami probably had an influence while he was training, hence why he spared Piccolo Junior.

He still killed Drum after drinking the sacred water and said to Piccolo Daimao the fight would not end until one of them was in pieces, so I think what really did change him was Kami's training (or just Akira Toriyama).

@Papasmurf - do you think Goku would let Tambourine get away if the latter begged to him?

He could actually sense the ki in Tenshithands' Kikoho unless he just knew it was "an amazing ki" because his hands were glowing

I don't think he could sense Tenshinhan's attack, he must've felt the raw power on his body because Ten was using so much of his own power.

So if it's primitive then he wouldn't be able to sense normal human-beings chi. Maybe he got a new understanding for life when he could actually sense everybody.

when it comes to mythical artifacts that can bring the dead back to life and a good opponent to fight, we know which one goku would choose.

I think Goku's abilities to sense chi were improved after drinking the Choshinsui, but like Papa said he already had this ability somehow.

Goku also spared Piccolo Junior life because of Kami-sama, otherwise the latter would die.
