I mean, deflecting the blast obviously made it so that Nappa sustained less damage. That is the context we are given based on Vegeta telling him that he shouldn't take the attack. Gohan's attack was just strong enough that it was still capable of damaging Nappa regardless of it not detonating.

I think you're omitting the fact that deflecting the Masenko made it so that it didn't detonate on Nappa because had it detonated, his hand would have sustained even more damage. I think Nappa could stop it with his hand but he would have suffered moderate damage from that.

Personally, I didn't mind it. I think Super has executed slice-of-life episodes relatively well for the most part. Though personally, I guess it does spread the animators quite thin and forced them to rush the animation with so many episodes to produce.
